Today we went on a snorkeling trip to Langkawi Islands. The tour we went on was almost as interesting as the creatures saw, just in very different ways. We knew we wanted to go to Langkawi Islands but had a hard time finding multiple tour companies. The one we ended up with seemed to have a monopoly on the market. Neither of us had quite seen such tourism for the masses but the awesome sights of the underworld did not let us down.
We were saddened by the amount of trash in the water and I was particularly disgruntled about to see it was commonplace to feed the fish sandwich bread. However staying on the boat to protest wasn't going to help much considering I was about four languages short.
On the bright side, the four islands that make up Pulau Payar Marine Park have been preserved well. They are rich in vegetation and their inhabitants were great to watch, especially all the crabs. One species was very tiny (1/2 inch across) and bright white. The other was larger and had a speckled blue and red shell. Here is a video from YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv0tzU3D9r8.
In the water we were able to see parrot fish, angel fish, clown fishes, barbs, and sea cucumbers. My favorite fish (which I can not seem to identify) was a small, box shaped bright yellow fish with black dots that were outlined in white. The runner-up was an Immaculate Puffer.
Once we were back to our hotel we decided our palettes deserved a bit of familiarity. We found an Italian cafe a block away from our hotel. The meal was fantastic but the most memorable part was when when their credit card machine broke .... no worries, while I finished the wine, the waiter took Brian to an ATM on his moped.
